Topic: Complex systems
In this course, we will engage with some of the foundational texts of complexity science, focusing especially on themes of computation, cognition, and social organization. Drawing on the first two volumes of the SFI Press series, "Foundational Papers in Complexity Science," we'll encounter seminal thinkers like Alan Turing, Claude Shannon, F.A. Hayek, Kenneth Arrow, John Holland, Herbert Simon, John von Neumann, Thomas Schelling, Philip Anderson, and Mark Granovetter. We'll read interpretive essays by leading complexity scientists alongside each text; we'll also connect these foundational works to contemporary currents in complex systems, cognitive science, and beyond. In addition to learning about key ideas in complexity science, students will learn how to read classic texts strategically--not just as sources of information but as wellsprings of inspiration that help generate new projects and creative ideas. Requires some familiarity with mathematics (as acquired through core courses in INFO or COG SCI) and basic programming skills.
